overview

THE PROJECT...

This was a collaboration between my younger sister and I. During the peak of the 2020 Pandemic, we had the goal of raising money for Black Lives Matter, as well as COVID Relief charities. We raised money through this project by creating hand-made face masks and donating 100% of the proceeds to those charities.

BRAND...

Our inspiration for the brand was based of the craziness during the 2020 pandemic, with the BLM movement protests that occurred during the time. As the world grappled with the pressing issues of racial inequality and social justice, I drew inspiration from the traditional clothing of Korea Hanbok, a symbol of tradition and cultural identity in Korea.

The decision to infuse the Hanbok aesthetic into my mask designs was more than just an homage to my Korean roots; it was a deliberate act of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. I believe that in celebrating our own cultural heritage, we can also acknowledge and respect the diversity of others. The BLM movement, at its core, champions the idea that every culture, ethnicity, and background deserves equal respect, recognition, and justice.

The Hanbok's elegant lines, vibrant colors, and intricate geometric patterns became the foundation for my mask designs. Basing the brand symbol off the Korean symbol of strength, power, and vigor, the final design of the brand was this circular geometric symbol.

THE MASK...

The design of the mask itself took inspiration from modern streetwear. The goal was to make a fashionable, functional, and comfortable mask that could be re-used. The mask featured a strip of Hanbok fabric that went along the center, with multiple color varieties. The straps that wrap around the ears were also adjustable allowing a custom fit to anyone without the straps potentially being too tight on the ears, making it comfortable for long term use.

PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL...

With the intention of advertising the masks on our instagram accounts, we filmed a promotional video (up top), as well as a photoshoot.

IMPACT...

The support we received from our social medias was nothing short of amazing. We had friends share our stories to spread the word, as well as share us pictures of themselves with the mask. We ended up raising nearly $1,000 to donate, charging $15 per mask.
